<this post is for Carla>

Well, it looks like i am going to have to go back to zagreb, again, because someone didn’t tell me about this until my last night and it was too late to indulge. Although, i want these sneakers NOW (can’t find them anywhere online); i am ok with having to go back to zagreb to get them. i heart that place! you know that you really love a city when you don’t need ‘activities’ to keep you occupied and you’re perfectly content aimlessly walking about daydreaming about rebecca west. but i guess it’s always good to have a real reason to have to go back, and what better a reason that to buy shoes?
In case you needed another reason to never buy Keds again (as if mischa barton wasn’t enough…):
Meet Startas Sneakers
Born in 1976 in booming communist Yugoslavia, Startas sneakers were once – and are now again – a sports and style icon! Originally designed for table tennis players, the soft canvas shoes were made by Borovo in Vukovar, in a factory established in 1931. Startas canvas sneakers soon became a legendary part of socialist cultural heritage. Very soon startas grew to be the biggest sports brand in the former federation, so big that it was one of the major sponsors of the 1987 Univerzijada international student games, a major sporting event that hosted more than 3900 athletes from 122 countries – all of whom were equipped in Startas sportswear. And now, after 17 years of free-falling into oblivion, Startas sneakers have been revived, revamped and redesigned.
long live startas!! I want these:

but in gray:

oh, and if american apparel ads were cool, this is what they would look like:

PS if someone would like to explain to me to why they use the Australian map imagery on their sites, that would be fab!

hahahahaha… i’m so getting you a pair!
;)
oohhh thanks honey! i love them too, i’d get pink and grey and wear one of each woop!
carla = genius!
there is something really late 70s about the map of australia (and this label!), maybe that is why. hehe.
Where can I get a pair of Startas?
I really love them and I looked at their “Off Line” shop, but it’s in a foreign language!
yea “offline shop” is in Croatian, so you’ll have to go to Zagreb to buy them :) But I’ve read that they are having shops in London, Barcelona… so that might be closer to you. I am currently stuck here in Copenhagen but I’m flying to Zagreb mid April and will buy myself pair or two. Just gotta love them!
They use that “flag” because it was used in the campaign for 1987 university games in Zagreb, try googling “Univerzijada”.
thanks :)
haha, this is crazy! the name sounded vaguely familiar, but then when i saw the sneakers it all started coming back!! i doubt i owned a pair, although it’s very likely that i did, but that i just don’t remember. those were made a while ago :)
lol. i am obsessed with them!!!
can you still buy them? and where can they be bought? (specially online)
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM!
They are so cute!
